| Abstract | Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulation was conducted as a result of investigation of effects of wave-and-lance length variations in the wavy and offset strip channels on the heat transfer and pressure drop over a wide range of Reynolds number ( $${600\,\le\,Re\,\le\,6,000}$$ ). For this purpose, five different channels of the wavy and five different channels of the offset strip were proposed. The models data in terms of the Colburn factor (j factor) and Fanning friction factor (f factor) versus the Reynolds number were numerically derived, and the gained profits of such channels were appraised using a thermal-hydraulic performance factor, namely JF factor. The simulation results express that wave length variations have significant effect on the j and f factors in the wavy channels, while lance length variations have prominent effect only on the j factor in the offset strip channels. It was also detected that the channels with increased wave-and-lance lengths along the flow direction averagely improve the thermal-hydraulic performance in the wavy channels around 13 % and in the offset strip channels around 21 %. The results of present study are expected to be useful guidelines for designing of the plate-fin heat exchangers as a chemical reactor to prevent from hot spots and improve thermal performance and product quality in the specific chemical reactions. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community.
