NDLI: Anonymous nuclear loci in Madeiran storm-petrel Oceanodroma castro (Procellariiformes: Hydrobatidae) and applicability across other Procellariiform families

Abstract	The conservation status of seabird populations has been deteriorating at a fast pace in recent decades. Studies of population genetic variation provide important insights regarding the evolutionary history of species, but also crucial information for conservation and management strategies. We report isolation and characterization of twelve anonymous nuclear loci in the seabird Madeiran Storm-Petrel Oceanodroma castro. These loci, on average 625 base pair (bp) long, showed high amplification success in eight other species representing all Procellariiform families. A polymorphism survey of these loci in O. castro from the Selvagem Grande I. summer population found an average anonymous genetic diversity of π = 0.0027 (1 SNP per 87 bp). Compared to the other small petrel populations breeding in Selvagem Grande I., O. castro shows the highest level of nuclear genetic diversity, despite its smaller census size. These markers will provide a valuable resource in future evolutionary and conservation studies of seabird species.
