Abstract	This study examined co-occurrence of substance use and study difficulty among students of University of Abuja, Nigeria. Participants (n = 600) were 3rd and 4th year full time undergraduate students of the University, selected through a multistage sampling technique. Results indicated that life time prevalence rates of the various substances were highest for alcohol (57.3 %), stimulants (35.7 %) and tobacco (24.0 %), with the least being heroin (1.7 %). The previous year and 30 days prevalence rates followed similar patterns but with lower rates than the life time use. Consolidated life-time substance use was 67.7 %, while that of current use was 46 %. Psychoactive substance use was significantly associated with study difficulty to varied extents. These findings underscore the need for further exploration of the socio-cultural underpinnings of substance use as well as robust mental health policies and intervention at the university and other educational levels in Nigeria, with a view toward stemming the tides of unmitigated substance use by students.
