| Abstract | We examined the efficient conversion of waste biomass to bioethanol by the marine-derived yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (C19 strain). In this study, two kinds of cellulose biomass, (A) waste from Undaria pinnatifida processing, and (B) paper shredder scrap, were utilized as raw materials. The hydrolysate of (A), and (B) were separately saccharified with enzymes, followed by an approximately five-fold concentration, using an evaporator. Both of the concentrated, saccharified solutions from (A) and (B) were mixed in various ratios and used as substrates containing glucose at 200–300 g/l for yeast fermentation. S. cerevisiae C19 produced bioethanol at 40–90 g/l from 100 ml of the substrates, and the optimum mixing ratio of the biomass in the substrates was found to be (A):(B) = 3:7 in dried weight. Using 3.0 l of the substrate at a ratio of (A):(B) = 3:7, and glucose at 235.0 g/l, fermentation was carried out at 30 °C and a pH of 7.0 by S. cerevisiae C19 in a jar fermentor (10 l), producing 87.7 g/l of bioethanol in 5 days. The fermented solution was fractionated with a distillation apparatus and 331 ml of ethanol purified to 788.0 g/l was produced. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
