| Abstract | The crystallographic structures of carbide formed in Ni$_{3}$Al- and TiAl-based intermetallics containing carbon are investigated in this study using transmission electron microscopy. In an L1$_{2}$-ordered Ni$_{3}$Al alloy with 4 mol.% of chromium and 0.2 mol.% to 3.0 mol.% of carbon, fine octahedral precipitates of M$_{23}$C$_{6}$ type carbide were formed in the matrix by aging at temperatures around 973 K after solution annealing at 1423 K. TEM examination revealed that the M$_{23}$C$_{6}$ phase and the matrix lattices have a cube-cube orientation relationship and maintain partial atomic matching at the {111} interface. After prolonged aging or by aging at higher temperatures, the M$_{23}$C$_{6}$ precipitates adopt a rod-like morphology elongated parallel to the <100> directions. In L1$_{0}$-ordered TiAl containing from 0.1 mol.% to 2.0 mol.% carbon, TEM observations reveal that needle-like precipitates, which lie only in one direction parallel to the [001] axis of the L1$_{0}$ matrix appear in the matrix mainly at dislocations. Selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns analyses showed that the needle-shaped precipitate is perovskite-type Ti$_{3}$AlC. The orientation relationship between the Ti$_{3}$AlC and the L1$_{0}$ matrix was found to be (001)$_{Ti3AlC}$//(001)$_{L10 matrix}$ and [010]$_{Ti3AlC}$//[010]$_{L10 matrix}$. By aging at higher temperatures or for a longer period at 1073 K, plate-like precipitates of Ti$_{2}$AlC with a hexagonal structure form on the {111} planes of the L1$_{0}$ matrix. The orientation relationship between the Ti$_{2}$AlC and the L1$_{0}$ matrix is (0001)$_{Ti2AlC}$//(111)$_{L10 matrix}$ and Ti2AlC//L10 matrix. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

NDLI is a conglomeration of freely available or institutionally contributed or donated or publisher managed contents. Almost all these contents are hosted and accessed from respective sources. The responsibility for authenticity, relevance, completeness, accuracy, reliability and suitability of these contents rests with the respective organization and NDLI has no responsibility or liability for these. Every effort is made to keep the NDLI portal up and running smoothly unless there are some unavoidable technical issues.
