NDLI: Effect of top borer(scirpophaga exerptalis wlk.) infestation on quality of jaggery

Abstract	A study was undertaken to investigate the effect of cane infested with top borer (Scirpophaga exerptalis Wlk.) on gur quality during 1999 to 2001 at Sugarcane Research Institute, Shahjahanpur (U.P.). The gur samples obtained from healthy and infested canes (3$^{rd}$, 4$^{th}$ and S$^{th}$ broods) of an early maturing and high sugar variety CoS 95255 were subjected to qualitative analysis. The results revealed significant maximal losses in terms of brix pol %, purity, colour and invert sugar in the canes infested with 3$^{rd}$ brood followed by 4$^{th}$ and 5$^{th}$ broods of top borer in comparison to healthy canes. The minimal brix of gur (85.88) and pol % (45.56) were recorded in samples obtained from cane infested with 3$^{rd}$ brood as compared to those obtained from healthy canes (i.e. brix 94.18 and pol % gur 80.85). The highest invert sugar (17.10) was recorded in gur from 3$^{rd}$ brood infested canes as compared to those of healthy canes (6.55).
