NDLI: The Relationships between Quality of Life, Satisfaction with Care and Self-Efficacy as Perceived by Adolescents with Diabetes: A Questionnaire Survey

Abstract	Satisfaction with care delivery has been identified as essential for maintaining adolescents’ quality of life. Self-efficacy has also been found to positively affect quality of life. This study aims to investigate the relationships between quality of life and satisfaction with care and self-efficacy in adolescents with diabetes. This cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study surveyed adolescents with type I diabetes. Eligible participants were 12–25-year-olds with diabetes in active long-term paediatric treatment. A total of 257/692 adolescents completed the questionnaire (41 % response rate). Descriptive statistics were used to describe the study population. Correlations and regression analyses were performed to reveal significant predictors of quality of life. We found significant associations between quality of life and satisfaction with care, general self-efficacy, self-efficacy in knowledge of the condition, and self-efficacy skills for independent hospital visits among adolescents with diabetes (all p ≤ 0 · 001). After controlling for age and gender, regression analyses revealed that satisfaction with care delivery (β = −.17, p ≤ .01), general self-efficacy (β = .22, p ≤ .001) and self-efficacy skills for independent hospital visits (β = .24, p ≤ .001) predicted quality of life of diabetic adolescents. The relationship between adolescents’ quality of life and self-efficacy in knowledge of the condition was no longer significant. Satisfaction with care delivery should be improved through the provision of care tailored to patients’ needs and a more supportive role for health care providers. Increasing the proactivity of patients’ roles by enhancing general self-efficacy and self-efficacy skills for independent hospital visits may also be beneficial to diabetic adolescents’ quality of life.
