NDLI: Pacific volcanogenic belts and intraoceanic volcanism

Abstract	Volcanogenic belts are structures that arise during the most important phases in the evolution of the lithosphere: intraoceanic, island-arc, continental-margin, and intracontinental belts. Apart from volcanogenic belts, there are widely occurring isolated local forms of volcanism (including deep-seated plume forms), which can be comparatively easily explained by the terrane concept. Contemporary notions of recent volcanism allow us to visualize our thoughts about paleovolcanological processes. However, one cannot gain deeper knowledge of recent volcanism, unless standing on the basis of the paleovolcanological foundation. Comparative analysis of the western and eastern sectors of the Pacific belt clearly illustrates its age and structural asymmetry of evolution. This paper discusses the most characteristic features of Pacific volcanism with special emphasis on contemporary oceanic and continental mineralization systems. V.V. Aver’ev (1966) repeatedly stressed the need for the definition of volcanism to involve all deep-seated forms of magmatic processes, while he classified hydrothermal systems as a special kind of volcanism.
