Abstract The morphology, electronic structure, and optical properties of self-assembled silicon nanostructures grown on the surface of highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) by molecular beam epitaxy have been studied by ultra-high-vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy in situ, as well as by Raman spectroscopy ex situ. At a coverage of less than one monolayer, formation of monolayer silicon nanoislands with an atomic structure similar to that of graphene has been observed.
