| Abstract | The objective of this study is to ascertain the effect of machining parameters and workpiece hardness on surface roughness of machined components and to develop a better understanding of the effect of process parameters on the machined surface. Such an understanding can provide insight into the problems of controlling the finish of machined surfaces when the process parameters are adjusted to obtain a certain surface finish. The collected data were analyzed using parametric analyses of variance (ANOVA) with surface finish as the dependent variable and hardness of the workpiece material, cutting tool position from the surface of the clamping device (chuck), depth of cut, cutting velocity, and cutting feed as independent variables. The results showed that surface roughness is significantly affected by the workpiece hardness, cutting feed, cutting speed, depth of cut, cutting tool position from the chuck, and their interactions with each other. The results suggest that feed rate and cutting speed can be adjusted to produce a certain surface finish when the position of the cutting tool from the surface of a clamping device or the hardness of the workpiece is changed. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
