Arguing from a practitioner’s point of view, this article analyzes objectives of business ethics education. To this aim, it identifies three main areas in which students should be helped to develop their skills and knowledge. First, future managers should be conscious of the ethical legitimacy of market economies. This would also enable them to participate more actively in public debates on business ethics issues. Second, business students should get acquainted with crucial aspects of ethical rules and standards within organizations. This particularly refers to codes of conduct. The determinants and effectiveness of such instruments are not well enough understood, yet, and could thus be more subject to scientific research. Third, it would be desirable that management students learn already during their studies how they can help improve existing business practices once they themselves become practitioners. |
