Abstract	It is suggested that high performance concrete is not fundamentally different from the concrete used in the past, although it usually contains fly ash, ground granulated blastfurnace slag and silica fume, as well as superplasticizer. The cost aspects of the use of silica fume are considered. The content of cementitious material is high and the water/cement ratio is low; the maximum size of aggregate is small. Although ordinary Portland cement is used, it must be compatible with a given superplasticizer; the causes of incompatibility are discussed. The distinct shrinkage behaviour of high performance concrete is considered and the reasons for an absolute necessity of wet curing are given. Some uses of high performance concrete are mentioned. A ‘prediction’ of the future of high performance concrete and of concrete in general is offered.À proprement parler, un béton à haute performance n'est pas fondamentalement différent d'un béton courant, bien qu'il contienne généralement une cendre volante, du laitier, de la fumée de silice et aussi un superplastifiant. Le coût de la fumée de silice peut avoir de sérieuses répercussions sur le coût du béton à haute performance. Dans un béton à haute performance, la quantité de liant est très élevée et le diamètre maximal du gros granulat est généralement plus petit que dans le cas des bétons ordinaires. Le ciment Portland doit être compatible avec le ciment utilisé, et plusieurs causes d'incompatibilité sont présentées. Les bétons à haute performance ont un comportement au retrait très différent de celui des bétons courants, si bien qu'ils doivent absolument être soumis à une cure humide spécifique. Après avoir rappelé quelques utilisations actuelles des bétons à haute performance, des prédictions sur le futur du béton à haute performance et du béton en général sont présentées.
