| Abstract | The decomposition intensity and the changes in the chemical composition of plant residues (birch leaves and pine needles) were studied in forest podzols in the zone exposed to the emissions from the Kandalaksha aluminum smelter (Murmansk oblast). The stationary test plots were placed at distances of 2 and 50 km from the pollution source. The intensity of decomposition of the plant residues weakly correlated with the degree of the soil contamination. The differences in the decomposition rates and the composition of the residues were insignificant and statistically unreliable or absent. The composition of the plant residues affected these processes to a greater extent. The changes in the chemical composition of the plant residues correlated with the biomass of bacteria and fungi. The peak of their productivity was observed during the first year of the decomposition of the plant residues. During this year, the plant residues lost about 50% of their mass, and the biomasses of bacteria and fungi increased by 2–4 and 8–13 times, respectively. In the prokaryotic part of the microbial community, the portion of actinobateria increased; in the fungal community, the portion of dark-pigmented mycelium became higher. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
