| Abstract | A comprehensive study was conducted to determine the concentrations, spatial distribution, hotspots, sources, and human health risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from agricultural soils in the vicinity of Changzhi, China.A total of 203 samples were collected and analyzed for 16 PAHs from agricultural areas around the industrial city of Changzhi, China.The total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 9 to 10514 ng g$^{−1}$, with an average of 917 ng g$^{−1}$. Positive matrix factorization analysis suggested that coal combustion, coke tar, diesel emissions, and petroleum combustion were the four main sources of PAHs in the soils around Changzhi, accounting for 34, 23, 19, and 24 % of PAH concentrations, respectively. The spatial distribution and hotspot identification maps showed that the most contaminated areas were related to the distribution of industrial plants. The benzo [a] pyrene equivalent (Bap$_{eq}$) concentrations varied from not detected (N.D.) to 1683 ng g$^{−1}$, with a mean value of 151 ng g$^{−1}$. Seven carcinogenic PAHs contributed the largest Bap$_{eq}$ (99.8 %), which indicated that they were the main carcinogenic contributors among the sixteen PAHs.Effective environmental risk control should be implemented in the region to avoid a significant carcinogenic risk to human health from soil PAHs. |
