| Abstract | Noril'sk, a major center for mining and smelting of high-sulphur nickel-copper ores, is considered one of the most polluted regions on this planet. Yet, long-term data on limnological changes in nearby lakes are lacking. Paleolimnological approaches were used to compare pre-industrial diatom assemblages with recent assemblages in 17 Noril'sk-area lakes in order to assess the effects of the metallurgical operations. Relative to other regions of intense mining and smelting activities, the Noril'sk diatom assemblages have experienced relatively little change sincepre-industrial times. The lakes are well protected against the effects of acidification due to their strong buffering capacities as a result of the surrounding bedrock and overlying glacial deposits. The alkaline nature of the lakes appears to have suppressed the environmental availability of metals, as most likely formed insoluble metallic complexes andbecame incorporated into the lake sediments. Changes between recent and pre-industrial diatom assemblages were recorded for some lakes; however, the taxa contributing to the greatest amount of this change were small, benthic Fragilariaspecies, and not acid and metal-tolerant taxa, as observed in similarly impacted regions. Emissions from mining activities resulting in watershed disturbances, such as increased erosion, likely accounted for shifts in these species over time. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
