Abstract	SEM tribometry was performed with one highly graphitic (EC-5),a mostly amorphous (M234) and a turbostratic (P5N)carbon-graphite seal material previously analyzed in part I ofthis paper series. These materials were made to slide againstpolycrystalline α-SiC counterfaces in moderate(1.33 x 10$^{-3}$ Pa=1 x 10$^{-5}$ Torr) vacuum andin 26.6 Pa=0.2 Torr partial pressures of 99.999%-pure helium andhydrogen, from room temperature to 800°C. The harder andstronger amorphous-turbostratic carbons exhibited lower frictionand wear in the presence of the test gases than the weaker andmore surface-chemically inert graphitic material. The resultsoffer some insights as to the relationship between friction,wear, the degree of graphitic order and gas sorption-relatedtribological behavior of carbonaceous seal materials.
