| Abstract | Purpose. The effect of CCl$_{4}$-induced experimental hepatic failure(EHF) on the sequential hepatobiliary transport of model organiccations (OCs), triethylmethylammonium (TEMA), and tributylmethylammonium (TBuMA), was investigated in rats. Methods. EHF was induced by an i.p. injection of CCl$_{4}$ at a dose of1 ml/kg 24 hr prior to the transport study. The cumulative in vivobiliary excretion, in vitro hepatic uptake by isolated hepatocytes,in vitro efflux (i.e., release) from hepatocytes, andin vivo hepatobiliary excretion clearance were measured for normal and CCl$_{4}$-EHF rats. Results. The CCl$_{4}$-EHF decreased the apparentin vivo biliary clearance (CL$_{o}$) and the in vitromaximum uptake rate (V$_{max, uptake}$) of TBuMA by 66 and 48%,respectively. The CCl$_{4}$-EHF had no effect on the CL$_{o}$of TEMA, but decreased both the V$_{max, uptake}$ (59%) and thein vitromaximum hepatic efflux rate (Vmax, efflux) of TEMA (80%). On thecontrary, the CCl$_{4}$-EHF had no influence on the in vivohepatobiliaryexcretion clearance (CL$_{exc}$) of both OCs. Conclusions. Transport systems for the OCs on the sinusoidal membrane(uptake and/or efflux), rather than those on the bile canalicularmembrane (excretion) appear to be prone to damage by the CCl$_{4}$-EHF. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
