Abstract	Parentheses in Simon's The Flanders Road – approximately 550 sets within 314 pages – affect the reading or processing of the text. Of minimal note are approximately 100 parentheses which offer brief and conventional clarifications, such as antecedents for pronouns. In more than 200 additional cases, parentheses, which slow and complicate the reading process, enclose phrases or subordinate clauses which are non-restrictive but which differ from parenthetical material (marginalized or de-emphasized material) in conventional prose: in Simon's text what is inside parentheses, often descriptive detail, is usually as noteworthy as what is outside. Most important of all are the 230 or so parentheses, some several pages in length, which set off independent clauses or groups of words with significant internal punctuation. In the 40 or so instances in which parentheses appear within parentheses (in one case, nineteen within one master set), Simon creates unprecedented mazes. All in all, partially because of parentheses, reading Simon's prose requires an abnormal amount of engagement – work – and in the most complicated cases, his parentheses may cause puzzlement and frustration. A reader of The Flanders Road is forced to engage stylistically in a sifting and connecting process which mirrors what the narrator attempts to do with experiences, memories, and imaginings.
