NDLI: Perceval and The Seeds of Culture: Work, Profit and Leisure in the Prologue of Perceval

Abstract	A return to the well trodden terrain of Perceval's prologue can be justified, I think, only by a conceptual refocusing of its function in the romance and against the corpus of Chrétien's work. Beginning with the topos of sowing and reaping, the prologue offers a dense and nuanced concept of culture through cultivation. At its rhetorical core lies an equation of work and reward which informs not only the relationships of God to sower and patron to author but later Perceval to his mother, Arthur and Gornemans de Gorhaut. Each relationship transacts an exchange of values -- material, chivalric, spiritual -- whose contractual terms return us to the seminal quid pro quo paradigm of the prologue. Tracing influence to Ovid, and drawing examples from Cligès, Guillaume d'Angleterre and Chrétien's love lyrics this article examines the vocabulary of value that underlies notions of work, leisure and profit in Perceval. It observes how these socioeconomic values participate in an evolving argument for culture in Chrétien that finds its most mature expression in his final romance.
