Abstract	Volker Braun's Die vier Werkzeugmacher is a remarkable narrative about a collective of East German toolmakers, whose privileged life finds an abrupt end after the collapse of the GDR in 1989. The story is adapted from a 15th century Italian novella by Antonio Manetti about a fat wood carver, who became the victim of a cruel prank by his fellow craftsmen and artists of Florence. This article investigates the intertextuality of Braun's adaptation, the interrelation of the themes of loss of individual and collective identity, storytelling and history, ideology and reality. Braun's text is no longer rooted in a teleological conception of history and ideological certainty. The contradiction and confusion of the historical events since the collapse of the GDR find their expression in the entangled layers of this complex narrative, which derives much of its persuasive appeal from its wide range of comic elements.
