NDLI: The technological possibility of fabricating tools by the method of laser surfacing

Abstract	The possibility of obtaing a layer of a high-hardness composite material on a tool of steel 65G by the method of laser surfacing with R6M5 powder steel is studied. The use of laser radiation with a power exceeding 1 kW provides for creation of a high energy concentration on the surface of the material and control over the temperature gradient in the volume of the tool. This makes it possible to create coatings with a minimum effect on the composition of the substrate in the fusion zone, obtain cast high-speed steels in which the primary carbides are distributed in the form of individual particles, and combine the surfacing and the heat treatment of the coating in a single process. The surfacing includes deposition of the powder steel on the surface of the treated part by means of a special batching crystallizer without any adhesive binder and treatment by a laser beam with a power of about 2 kW.
