| Abstract | We propose a numerical method of evaluation of the period of initiation of a fatigue microcrack at the tip of a surface cavity-like defect in the race of an axle bearing of the locomotive. In this method, we use a model based on the energy approach of fracture mechanics. To find the required mechanical characteristics of the material of the racer of an axle bearing, we perform static and fatigue tests of specimens of ShKh15 steel. It is shown that if the surface cavity-like defect is located in the most loaded place of the race, then a fatigue microcrack can be initiated near its smooth tip for a relatively short period of operation of the bearing. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
