Radioactive nuclides as tracers of environmental processes

Content Provider Springer Nature Link

Abstract Relatively short-lived radioactive nuclides of cosmogenic origin, such as$^{7}$Be (T$_{1/2}$=53.3 d),$^{32}$P (14.3 d),$^{33}$P (25.3 d),$^{35}$S (87.4 d) as well as$^{22}$Na (2.6 y) have come to be recognized as potential tools to trace environmental processes, such as precipitation, washout (precipitation scavenging), resuspension, atmospheric particle deposition and deposition patterns of airborne contaminants, aerosol deposition and aerosol trapping by above ground vegetation (air-to-vegetation transfer). Of the above radionuclides,$^{7}$Be as well as$^{210}$Pb of terrestrial origin and$^{137}$Cs, a fission product radionuclide, are commonly used for determining the atmospheric particle deposition parameters. It was found that the deposition velocity of$^{7}$Be-associated aerosol particles varied from 0.3 to 0.8 cm$^{.}$ s$^{-1}$(average 0.5 cm$^{.}$ s$^{-1}$), the washout ratio for$^{7}$Be varied from 103 to 375 (average 144), the resuspension factor for the$^{7}$Be-associated particles varied from 1.6$^{.}$ 10$^{-4}$to 4.2$^{.}$ 10$^{-4}$m$^{-1}$(average 2.3$^{.}$ 10$^{-4}$m$^{-1}$) and the air-to-vegetation transfer rate for$^{7}$Be varied from 5258 to 16180 m$^{3}$$^{.}$kg$^{-1}$(average 9856 m$^{3}$$^{.}$kg$^{-1}$) for grass, gramineae or poaceae the species. For the$^{137}$Cs-associated aerosol particles the deposition velocity varied from 1.3 to 6.3 cm$^{.}$ s$^{-1}$(average 3.4 cm$^{.}$ s$^{-1}$), the washout ratio for$^{137}$Cs varied from 284 to 3810 (average 1295), the resuspension factor for the$^{137}$Cs-associated aerosol particles varied from 0.1$^{.}$ 10$^{-4}$to 1.2$^{.}$ 10$^{-4}$m$^{-1}$(average 0.6$^{.}$ 10$^{-4}$m$^{-1}$) and the air-to-vegetation transfer rate for$^{137}$Cs varied from 39638 to 345279 m$^{3}$$^{.}$kg$^{-1}$(average 181197 m$^{3}$$^{.}$kg$^{-1}$) for grass, gramineae or poaceaethe species.

About National Digital Library of India (NDLI)
NDLI logo

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
