Abstract Within the framework of a mathematical model of a porous reacting medium, the statement and numerical solution of the problem of occurrence of combustion (smouldering) of peat as a result of the action of a low fire seat are given. It is found that at moderate temperatures, T ≤ 700 K, the smouldering of the initial reagent is limited by the processes of drying, pyrolysis, and by the reaction of oxidation of the carbon residue.
