Abstract	It is shown analytically and experimentally that, in general, four characteristic distances can be distinguished in the dependence of the signal intensity of a detection system on distance to an object. The origin of these distances is interpreted. Possible ways are proposed for determining object distances when they are at one of the characteristic points. The accuracy of the distance determination is essentially the same as the spatial gating step size, which is about 0.75 m for this system. The analytic dependences are found to be consistent with the experimental data. A method is proposed for using experimental data to calculate the average value of the "additional instrumental" delay time (~13 ns), which is difficult to measure directly.
