Abstract A method for detecting the absorbed dose rate by measuring the glow of air excited by ionizing radiations is described. Light is transmitted through optical fibers to a photomultiplier tube. The threshold absorbed dose rate is calculated as a function of the aperture of the detection system and the size of the light-emitting air region. The results of calculations and experiments with a nanosecond-duration beam of electrons with an energy of up to 300 keV have shown that air luminescence with the transmission of light through an optical fiber can be used for diagnostics of ionizing radiations with a resolution of no worse than 2 ns at an absorbed dose rate of >1 GGy/s.
