| Abstract | An estimation method of the plane directional thermal conductivity of fibrous insulations using the cyclic heat method and the transient hot-wire method is proposed. By assuming that the thermal conductivity λ $_{ h }$ of anisotropic materials measured by the transient hot-wire method is equivalent to that of the isotropic materials which have the same bulk density ρ and specific heat c as the anisotropic materials, the thermal conductivity λ $_{ h }$ is shown to be equal to $$\sqrt {\lambda _x \lambda _y } $$ , which is a geometrical mean of the thermal conductivities in the direction of the plane λ $_{ x }$ and the thickness λ $_{ y }$ of the anisotropic materials. For an alumina silica blanket (ρ=125 kg·m$^{−3}$), the thermal conductivities λ $_{ h }$, λ $_{ x }$, and λ $_{ y }$ were measured in the temperature range between −140 and 300°C using the transient hot-wire method for λ $_{ h }$ and the cyclic heat method for λ $_{ x }$ and λ $_{ y }$. In the same way, the thermal conductivities λ $_{ h }$, λ $_{ x }$, and λ $_{ y }$ of a rock wool (ρ=121 kg·m$^{−3}$) insulation were also measured in the temperature range, 100 to 600°C. From a comparison of the measured results with the estimated values of λ $_{ x }$, it is confirmed that the proposed method can estimate the measured values reasonably well. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
