| Abstract | Alterations in river flow can impact fish growth, an important metric for assessing fish health. Here, we use a known sentinel benthic fish species, Slimy Sculpin (Cottus cognatus, Richardson), to assess fish growth below a 15 MW dam and in a naturally flowing river in Ontario, Canada. We investigated fish growth under a restricted hydropeaking regime where the rate of discharge change was limited to 25% of the previous hour’s flow, and an unrestricted hydropeaking regime. Both biological (otolith back-calculated annual growth) and physical (hydrological) indices over a 9-year time period were collected. Slimy Sculpin growth was not significantly different between the two hydropeaking regimes in the regulated river, or the time periods encompassing the hydropeaking regimes in the naturally flowing river. There was a longitudinal gradient whereby Slimy Sculpin growth decreased with increasing distance from the dam. Slimy Sculpin growth in the naturally flowing river was significantly lower relative to the regulated river. Literature-based hydrologic indices explained little of the variation in annual growth. Indirect effects of altered flow such as changes to invertebrate abundance and downstream water temperatures may explain the differences in growth between rivers and the low correlation between annual growth and hydrologic indices. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
