| Abstract | This paper focuses on various social media tools and how they are being used by the fire service. Social media is described as a website that interacts with its user by posting and sharing comments, documents, video, and audio files. Social media tools include blogs, microblogs, podcasts and networking sites. Section 1 presents an overview of RSS feeds to receive the headlines of current information as it is posted to websites. RSS feeds require an RSS Reader to view the headlines and there are many to choose from such as web-based (Google Reader) or browser (Internet Explorer 8). National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has several RSS feeds to choose from such as news releases, public education, research reports and statistics. Section 2 describes podcasting as a digital audio or video file that is distributed over the Internet. Users can subscribe to Podcasts via RSS. FireChief, Firehouse and NFPA have a wide selection of podcasts for users to subscribe to. Section 3 presents Facebook as a popular social networking site to create online connections with others. Businesses and organizations are using Facebook to connect to their communities and customers. Many fire service journals, associations and a growing number of fire departments are creating a presence on Facebook. In Section 4, blogs are discussed as a website maintained by an individual or organization with regular entries of commentaries. A listing of fire blogs are presented to the reader. Section 5 presents microblogging as a messaging service that is web-based and allows users to post short messages within 140 characters. Twitter is considered a popular microblog. Section 6 provides implementation strategies for the fire service to use social media for emergency messages and fire safety campaigns. The paper closes with a discussion on the opportunities for the fire service to reach a broader audience with their fire safety messages. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources.
