Abstract	Peña et al. (2014: Boundary-Layer Meteorology, 150, 69–89) present valuable experimental material on wind profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and the adjacent free troposphere by quantifying the baroclinic influence. The main profile cases presented (10 in all) have a certain degree of redundancy and under-represent unstable conditions near the surface. One of the profiles appears to be close to the ideal conditions assumed in standard ABL profile formulations and could be used for their assessment. The near-ideal profile, as well as the vast majority of measurements presented, disproves mainstream ideal-case profile formulations that have a mid-ABL super-geostrophic wind-speed maximum: there is no trace of such a maximum. Moreover, several profiles suggest an influence of regional-scale upwind surface discontinuities due to a large forest of area ca. 50 km $$^{2}$$ , which can explain some of the special profile behaviour at Høvsøre presented in detail in previous articles with measurements from that site.
