| Abstract | This paper describes the quantitative extraction of various plasticizers in poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) using a supercritical fluid. Extraction pressure, temperature, and contact time were varied in order to determine the optimum extraction conditions. The effects of CO2 flow rate and the volume of an ethyl acetate matrix modifier were examined. SFE optimum yield at 45 MPa, 120 °C and 120 minutes was compared to the value obtained via a conventional Soxhlet extraction method. Mass balance studies performed on the SFE process accounted for both recovered and loss extract. This approach provided a good indication of the efficiency of the extraction process.The extract was analyzed via off-line supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) using both packed column (pSFC) and capillary column (cSFC) with flame ionization detection (FID). The plasticizers were identified as dihexyladipate (DHA) and triethylene glycol-di-2-ethyl hexanote (TEGH). The results showed that extracted DHA and TEGH were both separated by packed and capillary SFC. The separation times were faster in pSFC than in cSFC, but cSFC offered higher separation efficiency with less impurity eluants. |

It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT).
