| Abstract | The large discharge of radionuclides into the Pacific Ocean from the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor accident triggered considerable global concern regarding the spread of radioactive materials across the ocean. Ocean circulation models predicted that Fukushima-derived radioactive elements should be transported from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean by the Kuroshio and South Equatorial currents. Therefore, a marine benchmark study was initiated in the Asia–Pacific region to monitor Cs-134 (t 1/2 = 2 years), an unequivocal marker of Fukushima-derived ocean contamination, and Cs-137 (t 1/2 = 30 years), an indicator for all fallout. Here, we studied for the first time Cs-137 and Cs-134 radioactivity in sea water from 12 locations near Sri Lanka, from September 2011 to April 2013. We used ammonium molybdophosphate co-precipitation and gamma spectrometry. We observed no detectable Cs-134 and trace levels of Cs-137 of 0.72–1.72 Bq m−3 in all sea water samples. The absence of Cs-134 reveals that Fukushima radiation has not reached the shores of Sri Lanka. The Cs-137 levels are similar to baseline Cs-137 levels in the Indian Ocean, thus showing a pre-existing contamination due to past fallout. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
