| Abstract | March 6, 2006, was the $75$th birthday of outstanding Russian mathematician, Academician, ALEXANDER ALEKSEEVICH BOROVKOV. Alexander Alekseevich Borovkov was born in Moscow into the family of an aircraft designer. After graduating from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Lomonosov Moscow State University, A. A. Borovkov worked for a number of years at an applied research institution. At the same time, Alexander Alekseevich continued to participate in research seminars on probability theory, which were convened by A. N. Kolmogorov and E. B. Dynkin, and after a while he was admitted as a postgraduate student into the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His supervisor was Andrei Nikolaevich Kolmogorov, whose influence played a large role in forming the outlook and research interests of the young scientist. In 1959, A. A. Borovkov defended his Cand. Sci. (Ph.D.) thesis, and beginning in 1960 he worked at the Institute of Mathematics, Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1964 A. A. Borovkov defended his Dr. Sci. thesis entitled Boundary Problems for Random Walks. In 1966 he was elected corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1990 was elected full member of the Academy. From 1961 Alexander Alekseevich also worked at the Novosibirsk State University, holding the Chair of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics (which was created in 1965 on his initiative). Alexander Alekseevich Borovkov is an outstanding specialist in the field of probability theory and mathematical statistics. He is the founder and head of the Novosibirsk Probability School, which is well known in the scientific community. He obtained important results in such areas as limiting theorems for random processes, asymptotic methods of mathematical statistics, queueing theory, Markov processes, and boundary problems for random walks. A. A. Borovkov has authored more than 200 research publications. Among them are several monographs (presently he is finishing the laborious task of writing a large monograph in two volumes, entitled Asymptotic Analysis of Random Walks, jointly with K. A. Borovkov and A. A. Mogul'skii) and the textbooks Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics which nowadays are among the main texts for university students specializing in mathematics. These books have already seen a number of editions in this country, and were also translated into several foreign languages and published abroad. A. A. Borovkov founded the journal Siberian Advances in Mathematics, published in the USA, for which he presently serves as Editor-in-Chief. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the journal Matematicheskie Trudy (published by the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics) and a member of the editorial board of the journals Theory of Probability and Its Applications and Siberian Mathematical Journal, among others. The scientific and organizational activities of A. A. Borovkov are highly recognized throughout the country. A. A. Borovkov was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1979), the A. A. Markov Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2003), the Russian Federation Government Prize (2003) for writing textbooks on probability theory and mathematical statistics, the Badge of Honor Order (1975), the Order of Friendship of Peoples (1981), the Order For Services for the Homeland 4th grade (2002), and also medals For Valiant Labour (1958, 1967). A. A. Borovkov meets his 75th birthday full of energy and new research ideas. His scientific activity does not weaken with the years; his dedication to science and self-devotion continue to set a vivid example for his students and colleagues. The members of the Editorial Board of the journal and former students of Borovkov cordially congratulate Alexander Alekseevich on his birthday and wish him good health, long life, and further creative achievements. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

NDLI is a conglomeration of freely available or institutionally contributed or donated or publisher managed contents. Almost all these contents are hosted and accessed from respective sources. The responsibility for authenticity, relevance, completeness, accuracy, reliability and suitability of these contents rests with the respective organization and NDLI has no responsibility or liability for these. Every effort is made to keep the NDLI portal up and running smoothly unless there are some unavoidable technical issues.
Ministry of Education, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), has sponsored and funded the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) project.
