| Abstract | Since R. Risch published an algorithm for calculating symbolic integrals of elementary functions in 1969 (Traps. Amer. Math. Soc., 139 (1969), pp. 167189), there has been an interest in extending his methods to include nonelementary functions. In this paper, we use the framework of differential algebra to make precise the notion of integration in terms of elementary functions and logarithmic integrals. Basing our work on a recent extension of Liouvilles theorem on integration in finite terms, we then describe a decision procedure for determining if a given element in a transcendental elementary field has an integral which can be written in terms of elementary functions and logarithmic integrals. This algorithm first examines the structure of the integrand in order to limit the logarithmic integrals which could appear in the integral to a finite number. This allows us to write a general expression for the integral and then use techniques similar to those employed by Risch to calculate the undetermined parts. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
