| Abstract | This work is directly connected to the 1500th anniversary of the Abbey of St-Maurice founded in 515. In order to celebrate the event, important redevelopments of the Treasure of the Abbey are in progress for a new exhibition space. In this context, an exhibition showing pieces of the Treasure will take place in the prestigious Louvre Museum in spring 2014. Ways of packaging the objects for the transport has to be think about since the Treasure can absolutely not be damaged. The aim of this mémoire is to provide a specification to the scientific committee of the Abbey and, if necessary, provide the recommendations of this specification to the Parisian borrowers. This study examines every element to be identified in order to propose ways of packaging which are not only appropriate to the Treasure, but also reduce the risks associated with the objects transportation. First of all, the observation of the departing objects could increase their sensitivity and the consequences of the degradation which could be observed on the pieces. This means that elements of degradation are potentially present, caused by handling, shock, vibration, humidity change, pollutants and theft. Along with this observation, the specific characteristics are recorded to know on which surface and which position the objects can be moved. The life profile of the objects from their place of conservation until their placement in the display cases of the Louvre Museum, is then presented. So, the various phases of the transportation are developed for each of them and the potential risks are evaluated. This permit to know when they occur and what is the level of danger on the objects. Following this initial assessment phase, diagrams show how the packaging is built to reduce the impact of factors of degradation on the Treasure. In preventive conservation, materials used for the packaging must meet requirements depending on certain criterias such as the length of cohabitation between the objects and the material. So, the compatibility of materials is then attested in a specific situation. After that, proposals for packaging based upon the principle of double case providing effective protection is discussed. The arrangement of objects in the cases is then presented. Before exhibition in the Louvre Museum, three reliquaries will be exposed to the cathedral of Notre-Dame as religious objects. So these three objects are packed separately. This project exposes in total four transportation cases for the pieces of the treasure. Then, recommendations about the cases, their manipulation, fabrication, use and identification are discussed. Finally, this mémoire demonstrates the practical work that was made about two particularly complex objects of the treasure, in other words, the achievement of packaging of proximity. |
