| Abstract | Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo central investigar os aspectos relevantes das atuais discussoes sobre a educacao de surdos, tendo a LIBRAS como elemento importante na construcao da identidade e da cultura surda. O estudo foi conduzido sob a perspectiva da linguagem, elemento basico e constitutivo para a construcao da identidade e da cultura de todos os povos. A metodologia utilizada foi a pesquisa bibliografica, aprofundando os estudos de Quadros (2010), Skliar (2005), Perlin (2001), Strobel (2008), Costa (2010), dentre outros. Alguns dos principais resultados da pesquisa demonstraram que a lingua de sinais e a lingua natural do surdo, base para a sua identidade e cultura. Enfatizou-se a necessidade do respeito aos diferentes processos e fatores que influenciam na formacao de uma identidade e cultura, e as diferentes identidades e culturas surdas, resultado da dinâmica socio-historica, politica e cultural de cada comunidade, em seus diferentes contextos. Deaf education: reflections on the differences and cultural identity This research aimed to investigate the relevant aspects of current discussions about the education of the deaf with the LIBRAS as an important element in the construction of identity and deaf culture. The study was conducted from the perspective of language, basic and constitutive for the construction of identity and culture of all peoples. The methodology used was literature studies deepening Quadros (2010), Skliar (2005), Perlin (2001), Strobel (2008), Costa (2010) among others. Some research results showed that: - sign language is the natural language of the deaf, the basis for their identity and culture. They emphasized the need to respect the different processes and factors that influence the formation of an identity and culture, and the different identities and cultures who are deaf, a result of the dynamic social, historical, political and cultural needs of each community in its different contexts.
