| Abstract | three AWC (142 m, 139 m, and 138 m) were correlated with each other (r ≥ 0.93, p < 0.01; r ≥ 0.72, p < 0.01), and not different (p = 0.38; p = 0.48, respectively). This suggested that the athletes gave good efforts and that the distances were appropriate for describing the velocity–time relationship using the two-parameter model. For all participants considered together, using parameters that were generated using the distance–time version of the two-parameter critical power model, the dribbling CV (2.70 ± 0.34 m·s −1 ) was lower (−13%, p < 0.01) than the running CV (3.10 ± 0.32 m·s −1 ). The two values were correlated (r = 0.83, p < 0.01). The dribbling AWC (148 ± 27 m) was not significantly different (+7%, p = 0.39) from the running AWC (139 ± 36 m). The two values were not significantly correlated (r = 0.54, p = 0.14). Prior to data analyses, coaches’ evaluations were used to assign the athletes into three groups of equal size based upon their skill level: high, medium, or low. Results of one-way ANOVAs across groups revealed that skill had no predictable or consistent effect on CV or AWC. However, the highly skilled athletes had a higher dribbling CV, and only small reductions in CV and AWC as a consequence of dribbling rather than running. The effect of dribbling is quantified by the dribble:run ratios provided in Table 1, below. For the high and medium skill athletes, performance was affected to a greater extent in the long trial. In contrast, for low skill athletes, performance was affected most in the shorter trial, and this resulted in them having a large reduction in CV with dribbling (−19%) and a large increase in AWC (+36%). |
