| Abstract | Objective: To determine the association between obesity and depression, as well as the infl uence of gender, age, degree of adiposity and physical activity in patients of the Endocrinology Service of the Autonomous University Hospital of Los Andes, Merida, Venezuela. Material and Methods: Observational, analytical and cross-sectional study. We included 112 subjects of both sexes between 18 and 65 years old, 58 obese and 54 non-obese. Socio-demographic and clinical variables were evaluated. The patient's health questionnaire for depression (PHQ-9) was applied, and the degree of physical activity was determined through a self-reported survey and the use of a digital pedometer. Results: The frequency of Depressive Syndrome (DS) in obese subjects was 6.9%, and there were no cases among non-obese subjects (p <0.05). Obesity increased twice the risk of developing DS (Odds ratio: 2.00, 95% CI: 1.656-2.415).The DS was presented only in the female sex (5.1%). Among patients with grade III obesity, 25% had DS, while among those with obesity grade I, 5.3% and obesity grade II, 6.3%. No statistically signifi cant association was found between DS and physical activity. Conclusion: In this sample of subjects studied, a signifi cant association was found between the presence of obesity and the Depressive Syndrome, predominantly in the female sex and with a greater severity of adiposity. This fi nding should be considered when evaluating patients with obesit |
