| Abstract | This invention relates to an improvement in the prepa ration of carbonyl compounds by the oxidation of ole finically unsaturated compounds having at least six car bon atoms per molecule and, more particularly, to the preparation of methyl ketones from alpha-olefins having at least six carbon atoms per molecule. In recent years the so-called "Consortium' or Wacker process has been developed for the preparation of car bonyl compounds by the oxidation of ethylenically un saturated hydrocarbons and, in particular, for the preparation of acetaldehyde from ethylene. The Con sortium process is described, for example, in “Catalytic Reactions of Olefins on Platinum Metal Compounds' Angewandte Chemie 71, 176-182 (1959). The Consor tium process suffers, however, from certain disadvan tages, such as reduced conversions and isomerization of the charge stock and products when olefinically unsat urated compounds having six carbon atoms per molecule, or over, are utilized as the charge stocks. These disad vantages have been overcome by the improved process of the subject invention which uses a selective solvent to be hereinafter defined. |
