| Abstract | Eighteen thousand four hundred and ninety one blood donors were attended in the Blood Bank of the Hospital General de Mexico between May 1994 and May 1995; 317 of them (1.71%) were positive to the brucella test with Bengala Rose. This study was done because of the high detection of asymptomatic blood donors with positive brucella test. The objective of the study was to know the prevalence of the positive serology to brucella in blood donors an the means by they were infected. Material and methods: Two hundred and twenty eight blood-donors were included according to the criterion of the Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM-003-SSA2 1993) with brucella positive test, they were questioned and clinically explored. Results: From 9590 blood-donors, 228 were positive, with a prevalence of 2.8%, only one case presented clinical manifestations and his follow op was lost. Brucellosis was more frequent in men in productive ages, was found mainly in Estado de Mexico. In Mexico City the most affected Delegation was Iztapalapa, the contamination mean was mostly commercial milk and its derivates, the clinical positive case drunk goat unpasteurized milk and its derivates. Conclusions: Additional confirmation with 2-mercapto-etanol is required to define active brucellosis, a more conservative conduct is recommended in order to decide about the elimination of blood from donors with positive serology to brucella and no symptoms. Mexico City end Estado de Mexico should be considered as endemic zones for brucella dew to migration. |
