| Abstract | After describing the policy of the Dutch government with respect to retrenchment of Dutch Us, &, in particular, of the social sciences, a short history of the retrenchment policy is given, covering the period 1981-1986. Twelve strategic assumptions underlying one specific instrument of this retrenchment policy are articulated. The instrument deals with task reduction & the formation of "centers of excellence" inside the social sciences departments. The goal of this policy is to decrease fragmentation & increase quality in social science research. However, there is doubt that Dutch social science research should be considered fragmented, & also that the retrenchment policy will be effective. 1 Figure, 39 References. Modified AA |
