| Abstract | Many developing countries are facing problems regarding food security. Indeed, programs of self sufficiency of food production are more and more compromised when considering the increasing cost of seeds and energy in one hand and the global warming in another hand. Thus, such countries have to look for new alternatives in order to complement and to improve the existing food production systems. In this respect, biotechnological agriculture, including GMOs, is to be investigated in order to introduce more adapted and more efficient agricultural production systems which take into account the social, economical and pedo-climatic specificities. Of course, the introduction of such new activities needs to develop competences able to develop, select and adapt such new technologies. It is important to accept modern biotechnology as a new system of agricultural production of specific crops and products which complement and not to replace or to compete with the existing conventional production systems. This co-existence would be beneficial if well managed. For instance, developing genetically modified plants and crops tolerant to extreme drought and salinity or to serious diseases and pests would offer cultivating them in marginalized areas so far abandoned and unexploited such as arid and salty soils. Thus, such new cultivation wouldn’t compete with traditional and strategic agricultural soils and crops and do create new jobs and food resources. This strategy would be more successful when involving plants and crops native to developing countries and considering the local environmental particularities. Of course, developing national bio-safety regulations in the framework of Cartagena Protocol would also promote technology transfer and regional and international cooperation. |
