| Abstract | The end of the Algerian government’s monopoly on foreign trade since the decision made in 1991 has encouraged private importers. With the break out of civil war during the 1990s, their activity did not start developing before the 2000s. As members of family businesses or self‑made men, they knew how to seize the opportunities offered by the return to peace and by the increase in consumers’ creditworthiness. In less than ten years, they have become rich, sometimes accumulating vast fortunes. In addition to the large cities, where commercial activity is less intense, their entrepreneurialism has become particularly visible in the small towns, notably in those that offer special business deals. We chose to study Ain Fakroun, El Eulma, Ain M’lila and Tadjenanet in the north-east of Algeria. What these towns (fig.1) have in common is that they have experienced a sharp demographic and trade growth over the last two decades. This change in scope has also changed the nature of commercial prosperity. The supply chains have become globalized, whereas locally, sales methods and commercial premises have been transformed. Importers have specialized in providing certain types of goods and they regularly go to the Persian Gulf, the Middle East or Asia to buy stock, connecting these towns that have just left rurality to the world economy. |
