| Abstract | The difference between genders and the supposed male superiority create a vulnerable environment for women. The OAS adopted the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women, ratified by Brazil in 1995. After hold accountable the Inter-American Commission in the case "Maria da Penha" in 2006, Brazil enacted Law 11.340, for protection of the women. This work reflects the relationship between gender violence and the role of international law in promoting and protecting women's rights, analyzing the Belem do Para Convention and the IACHR's action in this case. |
