| Abstract | This dissertation presents a study of an unstable urban slope situated in the city of Santa Cruz do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul. The slope is located in the Alvaro Correa da Silva street, in the northern part of the city, where several houses and citizens have been affected by soil movement. The slope is geomorphologically associated to the Serra Geral Scarp, just at the contact between the Plateau and the Central Depression. The slope consists of a colluvium layer which is formed by basaltic rock boulders (Serra Geral Formation) immersed in a sandy-clayey matrix. This colluvium layer is situated over a basal siltstone layer (Santa Maria Formation). A program of laboratory testing was carried out, with material characterization tests as well as direct shear tests in soaked samples. With field instrumentation it was possible to relate slope displacements with piezometric level peaks, which occur when precipitation levels surpass a certain plateau. It is also presented a slope stability analysis, using shear strength parameters obtained with direct shear tests carried out using undisturbed samples of the colluvium. Factors of safety obtained in the analysis are typically close to one. An analysis of building pathologies caused by slope movement was also carried out, using data obtained with site inspection and interviews. Results showed that the main unstable area is concentrated along a strip of land oriented north-south in the central portion of the slope, from the scarp down to Jucuri river. Some houses in this central strip showed severe pathologies. |
