| Abstract | Resumen. La icnofauna observada en las sedimentitas rojas del Miembro Estacion de la Formacion San Salvador (Kimmeridgiano-Cretacico Inferior), se compone de huellas Sauropoda-Theropoda, en la que se incluyen sauropodos sin luz de rastro y tres tipos de huellas de teropodos: A) impresion tetradactila de tamano medio a grande, con escasa diferencia de longitud entre los digitos II a IV, y angulo interdigital II-IV de 66°; B) impresion tridactila de tamano pequeno a mediano, con una gran diferencia de longitud entre los digitos III y II/IV, y angulo interdigital II-IV de 85°; y C) impresion tridactila, traza subacuatica, probablemente de una sola extremidad del animal. Se sugiere que las capas portadoras de icnitas de la Formacion San Salvador pertenecen al Jurasico Superior, debido a la similitud con otros yacimientos de este periodo, en que tambien estan ausentes las huellas de sauropodo con amplia luz de rastro. Este hecho probablemente se correlaciona a la carencia de restos fosiles de titanosauridos en el Jurasico de America del Sur. Abstract. NEW DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS FROM THE UPPER JURASSIC OF NORTHERN CHILE.Sauropod and theropod footprints have been identified west of the city of Calama, Region II of Chile, in red beds belonging to the Estacion Member of the San Salvador Formation (Kimmeridgian - Lower Cretaceous). Narrow-gauge sauropod ichnites and three different morphologies of theropod footprints are described: A) medium- to large-sized tetradactyl impressions, with little difference in size between digits II-IV, and a II-IV interdigital angle of 66o; B) small- to medium-sized tridactyl prints, with a marked difference in size between digits III and II/IV, and a II-IV interdigital angle of 85o; and C) a subaqueous tridactyl print, probably made by only one foot of the animal. The San Salvador tracksite is assumed to be Upper Jurassic in age, because it is similar to other tracksites of this period in lacking wide-gauge sauropod footprints. This fact is probably correlated with the absence of titanosaurid body fossils in the Jurassic of South America. |
