| Abstract | The transfer of technology is carried out in order to improve the productive practices and, therefore, increase the profits and quality of life of the small-scale rural producers. In Colombia, non-specialized milk production systems have a low level of technology and, despite the many efforts made by the government, technology adoption rates remain low. Among these initiatives is the agreement of the competitiveness of the dairy sector of 1999, and the creation of the National Dairy Council (CNL), active until today, which promotes the productive improvement, competitiveness and the linkage of small producers to the value chain, the formation of human resources and research and technological development (Quintero, 2011). According to the CNL (2011), the technological level in the dairy sector is high for 8% of the country's productive units, medium for 35% and low for 57%. These low technological levels are reflected in the low prices paid to the dairy producer (Dinero, 2015). Studies developed in Colombia in specialized and stabled dairy systems have shown that the adoption of technologies would increase their profitability and productivity (Holmman et al 2004, Delgado and Franco 2006, Patino and Ortega 2013). However, adoption levels are still low in the sector and it is therefore necessary to study adoption processes in order to understand the factors that facilitate or limit the adoption of technologies (Holmes, 2007). Some studies have identified socioeconomic variables as the explaining factors in adoption (Yohannes et al, 1999; Monardes et al, 1990); other studies find that associativity and the intrinsic motivations of the producer are determinant (Valencia, 2013; Rodriguez, 2013). Currently in the country the National Policy of Innovation, Science and Technology seeks to increase the productivity of the productive sectors by incorporating innovation into the production chains (CONPES, 2016). Under this scheme, the project "Innovation Science and Technology for small dairy producers of the Ubate Valley (ICTPPLVU)" is aimed at increasing the profitability and productivity of small dairy producers, developing efficient production systems that improve the access to markets through the generation of technology and technical assistance. This research seeks to identify the level of adoption and the factors that have influenced the adoption of technologies by small producers of the Ubate Valley linked to the ICTPPLVU project, which was selected given the importance of this province in the national production of milk, so it can serve as a reference for the country's dairy sector. To this end, 40 productive units were studied, which were intervened by the project. Surveys were conducted to identify those factors that have had a greater influence on the adoption of the practices and technologies proposed in the ICTPPLVU project. The results suggest that the factors that influence adoption are the distance of the properties to the urban center, the size of the household, the economic dependence to the cattle ranch, the level of schooling and the time that the producer dedicate to the activities of the cattle ranch. On the other hand, it was found that the adoption of the practices contributed positively to productivity, milk quality and reproductive indicators. |
