Abstract	As many argue, marriage has become a choice and one living form among others. People become committed to each other, if this is in tune with their personal aspirations. They eschew close relationsships be it to a partner or to a child if they feel that they cannot live up to the corresponding ex¬ pectations. Women and men are said to mar¬ ry no longer because of economic reasons. The essay debates decreasing marriage and birth, but increasing divorce rates as a result of both, a change of norms and values as well as a change of individual strategies. At the same time it brings structures and constraints back into the analysis by insisting that to marry and to have a family defined as a System of mutual support will increasingly become a matter of income and work
