| Abstract | Biodiversity preservation has a high priority in nature conservation on a global, regional and local scale. The rate at which species are extinct today is very high and this is to a large extent a consequence of human influence on the earth’s ecosystems. The decreasing biodiversity in Sweden is mainly an effect of the landscape becoming more fragmented. GIS is generally considered as an effective tool for storing and analysing data for nature conservation purposes and during recent years the use of GIS in nature conservation at a county level has increased. This work shows a method for storing nature conservation data in a spatial database in the context of a county-level nature conservation programme. The study was conducted in Malmo County, SW Sweden. The database showed to be a useful tool in the county conservation work and in the strategic planning. A workshop followed by a written questionnaire showed that strategic planners and conservationists appreciated the database as a good tool for the intended purposes. Furthermore, the database was used to quantify landscape fragmentation on a biotope level using landscape indices. The process that was simulated was dispersal of vascular plants. The database was not optimal for this analysis task, however, the results showed considerable differences in fragmentation within the different landscapes of the county. The results are relevant for future policy-making on urban development and nature protection. |
