| Abstract | The South-American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is one of the greatest threats to the fruit growing industry in Brazil. During the feeding process, the larvae build galleries within the fruit, altering the flavor and damaging its production and commercialization . The present work had as its objective to study the factors involved in the selection of the host fruit and in the oviposition behavior of A. fraterculus. The electroantennographic responses of the males and females to the ethanolic extracts of the fruits of the peache tree (Prunus persica L.cultivar Chimarrita), Surinam cherry tree (Eugenia uniflora L.) Guabirobeira tree, (Campomanesia xanthocarpa Ber) and Brazilian guava tree (Psidium cattleianum Sabine) were considered. Also observed was the influence of the density of the females, the color (yellow, green and red) and the composition of the substratum of the oviposition (pulps of brazilian guava, guabiroba, Surinam cherry and peaches) in the fecundity, as well as, from the previous experience with artificial fruits containing the pulp of peaches and/or guabiroba, in the oviposition behavior of the A. fraterculus The electroantennographic response of the females was distinct to the extracts of the unripe and ripe guabiroba, ripe Brazilian guava and unripe Surinam cherry. In antennae of the males, the greatest depolarization average was registered in the responses to the extracts of ripe and unripe guabiroba, ripe and unripe Brazilian guava and unripe Surinam cherry. The electrophysiologic responses did not differ statistically between the sexes for all the treatments. The density of the females per cages and the colors of the substratum of oviposition did not affect the fecundity either. The females ovipositioned more on the substratum containing pulp of peaches and of guabiroba, when compared to the respective controls. A greater percentage of the inexperienced females , as well as of the experienced females, with the pulp of guabiroba and with the pulp of guabiroba and peach concurrently, ovipositioned and presented behaviors of dragging and puncture on the substratum that contained the pulp of guabiroba, but females previously exposed only to the pulp of the peach, did not present preference for any of the substratum. ______________________________________________ 1 Master of Science dissertation in Agronomy, Faculdade de Agronomia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.
